Maran Fazzi, physician Global Health
Maran is a board member of Outdoor Medicine and a physician in Global Health and Tropical Medicine. In her daily work, she is based at a district hospital in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanzania. In addition, she works as an expedition doctor for groups on Mount Kilimanjaro, serves as a pre-hospital physician for sporting events in both Tanzania and the Netherlands, provides medical training for Greenpeace, and once crossed the Atlantic Ocean as the ship’s doctor aboard a replica of a Phoenician sailing vessel from 600 BC.
Michiel van Veelen, Emergency physician, DTM&H DiMM
Michiel is one of the founders of Outdoor Medicine. After completing his training as an Emergency Physician, he worked for three years in Botswana in a referral hospital and in prehospital aeromedical retrieval, transporting patients by helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft across southern Africa.
Joost Hopman, medical microbiologist, DTM&H
Joost is Head of Hygiene and Infection Prevention at the University Medical Center Groningen. He is also Senior Lecturer in Community Health at Stellenbosch University (South Africa), an Infection Prevention and Control Consultant for Médecins Sans Frontières, and an advisory board member of the Infection Control African Network (ICAN).
His passion for Africa began in Ghana in 2000, where he worked for a year with a fellow student. Since then he has returned frequently both professionally and recreationally—for example rock and ice climbing in Morocco and South Africa and desert exploration in Mauritania. During the Ebola outbreak, he worked as a consultant for the WHO in Geneva and Sierra Leone, and conducted research in Mali.
