Michiel van Veelen, Emergency Physician, Dipl Trop Med & Hyg
Michiel is a co-founder of Outdoor Medicine and an AWLS & Mountain Medicine instructor. Michiel travelled overland from Rotterdam to Capetown 5 years ago and has been addicted to Africa since. He is currently employed by the University of Botswana as a Lecturer in Emergency Medicine. During his clinical shifts he has plenty of exposure to the typical acute presentations that characterize the region.
Joost Hopman, Doctor-Microbiologist, DTM&H
Joost is the Head of Hygiene and Infection prevention at Rabdoud University Medical Centre. He is a senior lecturer community health (Stellenbosch University, South Africa), Infection Prevention and Control Consultant for Doctors without Borders and advisory board member of the Infection Control African Network (ICAN). De passion voor Africa started in 2000 in Ghana where he practiced for a year. He has travelled to Africa since in his spare time (rock climbing in Maroccoa and South Africa, dessert exploration in Mauritania) and as a professional. He was working as a consultant for the WHO in Geneva and Sierra Leona during the Ebola outbreak and he performed research in Mali. Joost has been elected as SHEA International Ambasssador and is a member of the Healthcare Epidemiology SHEA faculty and recieved the Radboud medal for young potentials this year.
Joost ten Brinke, Surgeon in training, PhD candidate
Joost is a co-founder of Outdoor Medicine and an AWLS and Mountain Medicine instructor. Joost got hooked to Africa after several trisp and work experience in Tanzania and will continue his specialisation in Trauma surgery later this year in Cape Town, South Africa.
