The African Wilderness Medicine Course is held during and adventurous trip through Botswana. The course highlights all aspects of wilderness and expedition medicine relevant to the African setting. The curriculum will include acute treatment of snake- and scorpion bites, dehydration and hyperthermia, infectious diseases and improvised trauma managament.
The course is aimed at all medical professionals with an interest in wilderness medicine, outdoor sports and the African continent. Gained experience will be an ideal base for work as an expidition doctor, (cinical) volunteer work or electives as well as increase youre confidence in independent travel throughout the continent.
The round trip journey departs and ends in Maun, Botswana, featuring a kayak expedition in the Okavango Delta as a first highlight, further on to a mobile safari in the Moremi Game Reserve and the Makgadikgadi Salt pans.
We are travelling with Kayaks, small boats and 4×4 Landcruisers and spend the nights (bush)camping. A cook will prepare our food, consisting of light breakfast, brunch, light lunch and a cooked dinner incl a couple of glasses of wine. Our tenst will be erected for us and include either matrasses or stretchers and bedding.
A typical day will consist of medical workshops, an outdoor activity such as a walking safari, kayaking or boat tour, followed by a transfer to the next destination. Lectures will be held outside in the evening hours after sunset.
