Outerspace Medicine

Most people understand that spending time in space causes the breakdown of muscle. But did you know that astronauts are at greater risk of developing a back hernia? And that they are more likely to have ocular abnormalities? And, how do you resuscitate somebody without gravity? For answers to these questions, read the article ‘Aerodokters’, recently published in Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde (Dutch only). You will be given a small insight into this special branch of medicine by two aerospace physicians Ries Simons and our Outdoor Medicine colleague Maybritt Kuypers.
